1. Tell us about your company!
Scott Photography, LLC is based in Central VA; however, we’re available to service our clients wherever we are needed. It is my belief that photography shouldn’t be a chore for our clients…it should be fun! I aim to provide an enjoyable experience. In addition to weddings, I specialize in event photography, portraiture (headshots, seniors, family, etc), and product photography.

2. How did you get started in the photography business?
Photography has always been a hobby of mine. In 2012, I decided to take my interest and turn it into a profession, hence the birth of Scott Photography!

3. What do you love most about photographing weddings?
What I love most about photographing weddings is the ability to capture one of the most important days in a person’s life. The wedding day goes by so quickly, and the photographs help to preserve the memory of that special day. I love being able to document families joining together, capturing the rehearsed and candid moments and providing a unique package to the happy couple.

4. How would you best describe your photography style?
My wedding photography style is best described as photojournalistic. While there are definitely posed photographs of the bride & groom, family and friends, a majority of the photography are candid shots. I have the ability to tell the story of the entire wedding day as it occurs without interrupting the event for posed photos.
5. What do you think distinguishes your work from that of other photographers?
My work is different than that of other photographers because I capture the special moments for the couple and not chase the “perfect” photograph. I spend time getting to know the couple prior to the wedding to find out their likes, dislikes, and that “must have” photo. Whether it’s a photograph of a unique cake or a simple snapshot with the grandparents, I’m dedicated to meeting the couple’s needs.
6. What is your favorite part of a wedding to photograph?
My favorite part of a wedding to photograph is the jumping of the broom. During slavery, many marriages between slaves were not legally recognized. These couples often “jumped the broom” as a means of giving legitimacy, dignity, and strength to their unions. Many African-American couples incorporate this ritual into their weddings as a way to honor the past.

7. What is the best shooting experience at a wedding you’ve had to date? What made it special?
My best experience shooting a wedding was shooting my very first! A close friend of mine asked me to photograph their special day, I agreed. What made it special is that I, a new photographer, was entrusted to capture all of the activities of the day. I’ve vowed to take each wedding as seriously as I did my first, and pay attention to every small detail.

8. How far in advance should couples book your services?
I would recommend couples book my services at least 3 months in advance. This will give us time to learn about each other, define and clarify what’s important to the couple, and build a rapport. We can even schedule an engagement shoot prior to the wedding!

9. What do you wish couples would do to make your job easier?
Communication is the key! I appreciate it when couples give me an idea of what the “must-have” photos are. As the photographer, I will look for the best time to ensure that the moment is appropriately captured. This goes a long way to ensure client satisfaction!

10. What advice do you have for couples when choosing a wedding photographer? When choosing a wedding photographer, I encourage couples to seek a photographer whose style and vision coincide with their needs. This will bring out the very best in the photographer, and leave the couple with photographs they will treasure for a lifetime!
